The Best Time to Get Waxed

Finding the right waxing schedule is a big part of the struggle with waxing. How long is too long? Waxing again before the hairs are ready can cause its own set of issues. And waxing too late can certainly be painful. In this post we will go over the best (and worst) time to get waxed.

Waxing isn’t for everybody. There has to be a certain amount of growth before wax can even adhere to the hair in order to pull it out. Not everyone likes having to deal with the outgrowth, especially with a brazillian. But waxing too soon can throw off the hair growth cycle. Not all hairs are in the same cycle at the same time. It takes a few months of consistent wax schedule to get them in the same cycle. But if some hairs are too short, they won’t be pulled, and they’ll stay out of sync with the rest of the hairs, which causes uneven growing patterns. Waxing too soon can also mean that the hairs start growing back before you’re ready for them too. Say you’re going on vacation and you want that vacation smooth skin. If you get waxed too soon before the vacation starts, you’ll start seeing the regrowth before the end of it. No one wants regrowth on a brazillian, while still on vacation.

Getting waxed too late has it’s own set of problems, though. Maybe you’re the kind of person who doesn’t care as much about regrowth. So you let it go longer than the recommended 4 or 5 weeks. Once hairs grow past a certain point, it makes the service itself harder to work with. The wax may not be able to get through the hairs and down to the base in order to pull it out and when wax pulls on the shaft of the hair, it just causes tugging and pain. It may still come out, but not without some unnecessary damage. That can also make it easier for the hairs to break, which also causes uneven growth cycles.

There is a sweet spot between the two. Generally if you are new to waxing, your hair cycles haven’t slowed down enough yet, and in 3-4 weeks you will be ready to be waxed again. For those more experienced with waxing, we can generally wait closer to 4-5 weeks. Ultimately what we’re looking for are hairs that are about the length of a grain of rice. That is the perfect length for the wax to adhere all the way down to the base for smooth removal.

These are the reasons why we usually recommend 3-4 (if you’re just beginning your journey) or 4-5 weeks between waxes. Of course we’d love to see you as much as possible. But ultimately we want you to have the best experience you can have with us, and the way to do that is with consistency. Waxing already hurts. Don’t make it hurt even more.
