Wet vs. Dry Sauna
When you think of saunas, you probably only think about heat. But there are other factors that can change how you choose which is right for you. Wet or dry? In this post I will go over the main differences between the two.
The level of humidity is the most notable difference. Wet saunas have up to 100% humidity. Wet saunas will also usually have hot rocks where you can pour water on to produce more humidity. A dry, or infrared, sauna will have a much lower level at 10-20%. A dry sauna won’t produce any extra humidity so that also makes them safe to bring in devices, such as your phone.
While both types of saunas do produce heat, they actually range from very different levels of heat. A wet sauna lowers the heat range to generally 90-120 degrees and the heat felt mostly comes from the humidity. A dry sauna can generally go to much higher temps since the steam isn’t a factor. They can range anywhere from 160-195 degrees.
So why are they so different? The levels of humidity and temperature can promote different kinds of health benefits when used. The steam from a wet sauna will help with respiratory issues and asthma, and the low heat levels make it safer for people with heat related health issues. The steam also promotes clearer and tighter skin. Whereas, the heat and low humidity levels of an infrared sauna will help with circulation and detoxification through more sweating, and promote healing and better sleep.
While there are notable differences, it also comes down to your own preference. I, personally, don’t like high humidity so I prefer infrared saunas. If you want to try for yourself, our infrared sauna is free to use for anyone who books an appointment (not recommended after waxing, certain facials, or for those who are pregnant) with Jefferson City’s own, Respiro Spa.
