What is Craniosacral Massage?

You may have heard the term while researching how to relieve headaches, but it doesn’t really explain the technique. Craniosacral is a very different kind of massage, and you should know what to expect before booking. In this post I will explain what Craniosacral is and why you should try it for yourself.

Craniosacral massage is centered around the current of the cerebralspinal fluid that flows in our body. New studies have shown that the cerebralspinal fluid actually flows through our entire body - not just the head and spinal cord. Because of this, we tap into the flow all over, looking for any areas that may be restricted or stuck.

The flow of the cerebralspinal fluid is very superficial, so light touch is necessary in feeling for it. If you press too hard, you push right past it. Because of that, there is also no movement in this type of massage. Gliding over the body will push through the flow, instead of feeling for it.

So, what can you expect with this type of massage? I like to describe it as more of an assisted meditation as opposed to massage. We encourage you to seek inward to feel the flow yourself, and listen to what the body is trying to tell you. Sometimes, we just need having someone there to listen to you and your problems, and Craniosacral allows us to listen to what your body is trying to say. I find Craniosacral most beneficial for listening first, then going back with more traditional massage to work the areas that were restricted. It is also best for people with anxiety or those who need to take time away for themselves.

Craniosacral is truly the type of experience that needs to be, well, experienced, to see the benefit of it. If this is something that you have been wanting to try, you can schedule with Jefferson City’s own, Respiro Spa.
